The Wood Brothers Shine With Lindsay Lou In Maryland

The Wood Brothers took the stage with their signature folk, gospel, blues, and jazz blend. From the opening notes of “Between the Beats,” the audience was locked in, responding enthusiastically to the brothers’ seamless harmonies and virtuosic instrumentation. Chris Wood’s upright bass brought a rhythmic heartbeat, while Oliver’s guitar work and soulful vocals intertwined effortlessly with Jano Rix’s multi-instrumental mastery. The band is leaning heavily on their 2023 studio album Heart is the Hero, which has spawned a plethora of fan-favorite tracks loaded with plenty of The Wood Brothers’ trademark sound. Opting for “Between the Beats” to open the show was a testament that the Wood Brothers are still enjoying their new music repertoire. 

The setlist traversed their rich catalog, with highlights including the tender “Little Bit Sweet,” the funky and uplifting “Happiness Jones,” and the audience-favorite “Postcards From Hell.” The latter requested sporadically throughout the night, brought the audience to their feet, a moment of collective celebration that underscored the enduring power of their music. Oliver Wood showcased his ability as not only a band leader but also a frontman as he interacted with the audience between songs, sharing stories from the road, delivering quick, sharp-whitted anectodes that had the audience laughing, and complimenting the energy from the audience. 

Lindsay Lou joined The Wood Brothers for a transcendent rendition of Lonnie Donegan‘s “Rock Island Line,” where her voice added a soulful depth. The collaboration was seamless and electric. The four artists huddled around a single microphone, bobbing and weaving as they showcased their harmonies, epitomizing the collaborative spirit of roots music. Oliver Wood highly praised Lindsay Lou; she smiled as compliments echoed through the PA. The audience echoed the sentiment as it was clear she had won them over with her beautiful voice.
