Mountain Grass Unit Unveils New Single “Hey Mama” Ahead of Highly Anticipated EP [Listen]

Mountain Grass Unit, Birmingham’s dynamic bluegrass quartet, has released their newest single, “Hey Mama.” This high-energy track offers fans a taste of what’s to come on their upcoming EP Runnin’ From Trouble, slated for release on September 20, 2024.

“Hey Mama” is an exhilarating blend of swift picking and lush harmonies. It stays true to the band’s roots while pushing the boundaries of bluegrass and Americana. The song builds toward a striking climax, with fiddler Josiah Nelson’s violin solo soaring over the track, elevating it to new emotional heights.

As described by mandolinist and vocalist Drury Anderson, the song’s theme centers around the idea of leaving one chapter of life behind to embrace a new beginning. “We wanted to capture the kind of raw, live energy that fans experience at our shows,” Anderson shared. “We’re excited for everyone to hear it.”

Produced by Mike Harris (Old Crow Medicine Show) and mixed by Morgan Jahnig (Old Crow Medicine Show), Runnin’ From Trouble delves into the fusion of bluegrass with influences from jazz, country, funk, rock, and even metal. The 5-song collection was recorded at Nashville’s Hartland Studios and will continue demonstrating Mountain Grass Unit’s ability to challenge genre conventions.

2024 has been a breakout year for the band, with performances at major festivals like DelFest and WinterWondergrass. Their new EP captures the energy of these live shows, promising fans a fresh take on bluegrass infused with the versatility and innovation the band is known for.

Mountain Grass Unit will celebrate the release of Runnin’ From Trouble with a performance at Louisville’s Bourbon and Beyond Festival on September 21, followed by a run of high-profile shows. The band will share the stage with Billy Strings at Renewal in Buena Vista, CO, and later open for Tyler Childers and Leftover Salmon. The band will also headline their biggest hometown show to date at Birmingham’s Iron City on December 27.
