News By Stu Kelly / August 26, 2020 On August 26th, 2000, renowned bass player Allen Woody, co-founder of Gov’t Mule and longtime bassist for the Allman Brothers Band, died of a heroin overdose. Woody unexpectedly passed away 20 years ago to the day. He was 44. The death of Allen Woody hit especially close to Warren Haynes who spent a lot of time with him not only in Gov’t Mule and the Allman Brothers, but also traveling the world as well. Haynes recalled Woody as “my partner in music” and his “partner in travel and adventure.” In addition to the touching tribute Haynes also shared a poem titled “Smile At Full Staff” dedicated to his lost friend.
